IBJJF Worlds 2026: Qualification System, Dates, and How to Register

The Biggest Tournament in BJJ

The IBJJF World Championship β€” commonly called "Mundials" β€” is the most prestigious tournament in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Held annually in the United States, typically at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California, it attracts the absolute best competitors from around the world.

For the 2026 edition, scheduled for May 28–31, the IBJJF has implemented changes to its qualification system that every aspiring world champion needs to understand.

The Qualification Point System

The IBJJF has moved toward a ranking point system that rewards consistent competition throughout the season. Here's how it works:

  • Points are earned at IBJJF-sanctioned events throughout the year (Opens, Grands Prix, and major championships)
  • Higher-tier events (Europeans, Pans, Brazilian Nationals) award more points than local Opens
  • Black belt divisions: Top-ranked athletes may receive seeded positions in the World Championship bracket
  • Lower belt divisions: Generally open registration, though some divisions may have participant caps

Point-Earning Events

  • IBJJF European Championship (January/February)
  • IBJJF Pan American Championship (March/April)
  • IBJJF Brazilian Nationals
  • IBJJF Opens worldwide (London, Paris, Tokyo, Atlanta, Houston, etc.)
  • IBJJF Grand Prix events

Registration Requirements

  • Active IBJJF membership: Annual fee required, must be current at time of competition
  • Belt registration: Your belt rank must be registered with IBJJF and verified by your professor
  • Gi compliance: White, blue, or black gi meeting IBJJF specifications (no custom colors, proper patch placement)
  • Registration fee: Varies by division (typically $100-150 USD for a single division)
  • Minimum time in grade: IBJJF enforces minimum time requirements between belt promotions

How to Prepare for Worlds

12 Months Out

  • Set your target weight class and begin any necessary body composition changes

6 Months Out

  • Compete at IBJJF Europeans (January) or Pans (March) as major preparation events
  • Identify and sharpen your A-game β€” the techniques you'll rely on under maximum pressure
  • Begin studying potential opponents' games through competition footage

3 Months Out

  • Enter a final IBJJF Open as a competition tune-up
  • Increase sparring intensity with competition-specific training
  • Finalize travel and accommodation arrangements
